Forty long-term unemployed people from North-Eastern Germany fly to Mallorca (Germany’s favourite vacation island) to participate in a 10-week internship programme. Is this their ticket to a better life?

Thomas

A reliable job for THOMAS (36)

‘This project lasts ten weeks. I want it to continue for the rest of my life. I want to go there and stay there. One way ticket.’

For four years Thomas worked as a naval navigator. Then his mother started going blind. In order to take care of her he gave up his previous life in Barcelona, moved to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, being jobless, started to live on social welfare. He became depressive because of the long and grey winters and his hopeless situation there. Now his mother is better and Thomas can start taking care of himself again. He speaks some Spanish and loves the sun and the sea. His idea is to use the project as a springboard: His aim is it to find a permanent job and a flat, and to stay in Mallorca.
